Brush With Greatness

Those of us who can remember back to when David Letterman was still funny may recall a skit he used to do called "Brush With Greatness", wherein studio guests would share their experiences while in contact with a famous person. I once attended a taping of his show, (after he moved to CBS and into the old Ed Sullivan Theatre where the Beatles once performed for America on television), and in the weeks between when I knew I would be going, and when I actually attended, I keep hashing through my memory for any such incident in my life that would apply if I was called upon. An elevator ride with the golfing great Gene Sarazen, during which no words were spoken, (he said goodbye as he got off, I think I said the same, maybe I just nodded; I was in shock and awe), was the closest I could come. But, one of my golfing buddies (the game is ubiquitous) has a better story to tell. His e-mail is reprinted here with his permission, his identity and his location are withheld to protect his privacy.

Goodafternoon Everyone:

Just a note to let you all know how our week, or last couple of weeks, have been. Those of you that have been here know that we get involved in different activities in the line of work.

Last Friday 4/23/04 P___ and I got to meet PRESIDENT BUSH and have our picture taken with him. It was a real honor for us. We have met Bush senior and Jeb, Florida's Gov., several times before, and they have stayed here also. The President was here for a fund raiser, about 160 people attended.

He was only going to stay 45 min's. for pictures then a quick walk around the tables for a hand shake with those who did not get a picture (?) and a bite (salad), and a 20min speech. BUT, he talked for and 1 1/2 hr's. answered questions very very relaxed. During the pic's. They (his people) put up a blue drapery, US & FL. flags; when you got your picture no one else could see or hear you it, was very private and nice. P___ mentioned that his Dad stayed here before, the President said he knew that and "you had the better man here". What a great compliment to a Father. We had a brief casual talk and as we walked away I said, Mr. President (shaking his hand) I sure wish you were my COMMANDER IN CHIEF when I was in Viet Nam, He gripped my hand and said "THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN ON MY WATCH".

So for 2 weeks we worked with the secret service and just about everyone else you could think of. It was a lot of work and long days but worth it for us. (5am til 10pm work and meeting's.) Snipers on the roof, seals in the water, 87' Coast guard cutter right off the beach and all the local agencies. And they closed the pass all this time.

When he walked out of the tent to his car they made everyone go inside just like when he drove up. But he stopped and said "where are all the wait staff"? He called them all out, took a group picture and shook hands and talked to every one of them, 33 total. P___ and I got a few momentos from the different agencys that were here, but the bottle of wine from the White House chef with the presidential seal on it was great. I felt like a little kid in Toy's R us.

I hope I didn't make this too long? There is more to tell, but as most of you know I never quit talking anyway.

Later & Please stay Healthy

Addendum: Did you notice that my friend served in Vietnam? Vietnam is where my friend served. His service was in Vietnam. Okay, my point is, because he served in Vietnam, you know, the war in Southeast Asia; he is just as qualified to become President as that Senator from Massachusetts. You know the one I mean? He served in Vietnam....doesn't have anything else to tell us.......served....nothing....ring any bells?

Comments

OK... so he served in Vietnam, but the question is... is he haughty looking and French?
