Paging Michael Schiavo- Miracles Do Happen
Terri Shindler-Schiavo. It is, I believe, with intent that the group National Right To Life identifies Terri by both her married and maiden names. Their point, as I take it to be, is that she belonged to the Shindler family before, and since, she became a Schiavo.
And, I also believe, given that Mr. Sciavo no longer has an interest in her existence, while her parents wish her to continue on, using her maiden name and thereby reaffirming her heritage is more appropriate than it is to continue to recognize her marriage as valid. For while marriage is not necessarily permanent, blood is. Mr. Schiavo is determined to bring a permanent ending to his relationship to Terri, her death. Her parents want to help her recover. And his powers to act on her behalf toward this unalterable end is based on his connection to her through an alterable arrangement, marriage; sad. (his powers to call for an end to her life-support are also based on his contention that she wished to not be kept alive atificially). The courts say her parents have no powers in the matter.
Especially sad when the state of her condition is in doubt, with experts on each side of the possibilties strongly holding that she either is, or isn't, aware of her surroundings. Either can, or can never improve. Terribly sad when we consider that her parents are willing to take on the responsibilites of her care and rehabilitation. Her parents, who have known her longer than anyone, and, who believe that she responds to them.
And, who is to say what is possible? Consider the story of Sarah Scantlin; brain-damaged for twenty years, and then suddenly she regains the ability to speak. The experts did not predict, and can not now explain, her recovery! How can anyone be certain that Terri Shindler-_______ could not also recover?
This woman, Terri, who came to be injured under suspicious conditions, has been denied the treatment and therapy which may promote the sort of miracle which Ms. Scantlin has created. Yes, which Ms. Scantlin has created; not the doctors and nurses, though we gratefully acknowledge them for the care and expertise they have provided, (and I won't presume to give credit to the hand of the Lord, for I have no evidence that he directly intevened). I credit the miraculous powers to heal ourselves which we all possess, and which,in her case, Sarah Scantlin exercised. How she, and the rest of us, came to be endowed with such powers is a discussion I will leave for another time; my point is to illuminate the fact that we all possess such powers, and that the extent to which they will be exercised is unknowable beforehand. Though we do understand some of the parameters within which such recovery is more likely, and we know that Michael Schiavo has been denying those contributory conditions to the Shindler's daughter for the past ten years.
The possibility that Terri will heal herself only becomes a certainty when she either achieves that goal, or her body dies. Until that time comes, anything is possible. Miracles happen!
Ask Sarah. For the first time in two decades she can answer.
[I wish to compliment Sarah on that achievement. And, I thank all who had a helping hand in her recovery. Lastly, I pray that Michael Schiavo will get out of the way, turn Terri's care over to her parents, and allow her the very best opporunity to get better.]

Great post, I wish everyone would begin to take a good, hard look at Terri's situation. It scares me that it would take an act from the Governor of a state to keep the hospital from turning off her life support. Thanks, Richard. Keep up the good work.

Michael Schiavo and George Felos, etc. are threatening to begin starving/dehydrating Terri for the third time February 22nd.
It's time to burst the blogosphere for Terri! Ultimate goal? Getting her out of the hands of those trying to murder her and back on the road to her recovery in the care of her parents/siblings/etc. and those who love and want to help her.
Why Refuse Terri Schiavo Speech Therapy--Unless Michael Doesn't Want to Know What She Thinks If Michael Schiavo is so sure that Terri wants to die why does he refuse to give her speech therapy?

Very nice and moving post. Sarah Scantlin reminded me of another inspirational story: that of Kate Adamson, who at age 33 suffered severe paralysis from a brainstem stroke but who eventually recovered. She's now a motivational speaker. I can't vouch for her as I've not heard her speak, but it's yet another example of how our bodies - or indeed if you'll indulge me, the Lord - works in mysterious ways to heal. Pray for Terri, AND her husband.

If anyone wants more info on Juan's (laudable) crusade, I'm sure he'd be receptive to an email so he can provide more details.

Hello,
I suffered a severe skull fracture with traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury that happened in 1989. I was diagnosed with no recovery to walk or talk again. My memory was wipped clean. My husband of 22 years denied the necessary rehabilitation treatment that I needed. He was set to send me to a nursing home however the cost was huge. He had no one to "sue". After a year of trying to "sue" and gain money he left me and three small children ages 9, 7 and 5. My children gave me the love and support, care and feeding like that of a baby. They became my parents and with their love and care over the years I now can walk with a cane I can talk and with the help of computers communicate very well I have the education now possibly of a 3rd grader but a mighty happy one at that. That was 1989 it took me the first ten years just to get my brain out of the fog of confusion after such a blow to the brain it really scrambles you .
But I can say this I was aware of people and them talking to me I just could not communicate the same way as before it was like I was trapped inside and no one would slow down long enough to talk to me.
My children since they were so young had that time to give and they did. Everyday they worked with me. We fell lost through the cracks in the system. However with a strong faith in God and each other and finally the help of our church we are survivors.
I pray everyday for Terri and her family becasue she IS IN THERE and she is trying to tell us but she is being silenced for reasons we do not yet know. The very fact Michael wants her gone is scary enough. Spousal abuse takes many forms and this is clearly one of them.
I pray I pray day and night she is a miracle just like the doctors have said to me that it really is not explainable but a miracle that I am able to walk and talk again. With brain injuries it takes lots of time for the brain to heal and if rehabilitation is given to you , you can come back.
We are the silent victims. Help save Terri.

Terry is NOT on life support! She just needs food and water.- So do the rest of us. Discontinuing food and water to an individual condemns them to a painful death by dehydration.
There is no reason for this. - If she was being artificially kept alive then, fine, pull the plug on the respirator. But she's not!
All of us started life needing other people to feed us. There is no reason to deny her the necessary care - food and water, like any normal person.
