Reality Check May 24, 2005

As the debate on stem cell research goes forward, remember that there are three types of stem cells acquired for research.

(1) Adult Stem Cells
(2) Umbilical Cord Stem Cells
(3) Embryonic Stem Cells

Thus far, only research using the first two types have yielded results. The third type, the cells from living embryos, are the controversial ones. Some people believe these cells to be the equivalent of a human being, other people don't care if anyone is offended by the destruction of these life forms. So, when you hear someone talking of stem cells, make sure that you are given an account of which type is being discussed. If you hear a report which does not differentiate between the types; you are not getting the whole story.

AND - all we're talking about here is federal money, not private, corporate or philanthropic.

Get it from Gates/Buffet/Soros.

Great point Sandy P, the argument is over whether we should spend money Federal money to study embryonic stem cells. There is no prohibition against a private concern from spending all the money they wish to research stem cells.

You also reminded that stem cells are a potential source for cures, there is no guarantee they will yield the result we hope to one day achieve. And, there are other methods for finding cures; as all the history of medical science before the discovery of stem cells proves. Stem cell research could prove unfruitful, and stem cells could be an uncontrollable dynamo of creation.

The otherwise-rational Cox & Forkum, who are advocates of the Objectivist, atheistic philosophy of Ayn Rand, weigh in on this subject with a disturbingly inane critique, the kind of which we usually only see from liberals. They seem to miss the point that the boy might never have lived in the first place if he was the one in the test tube.

We who advocate for the unborn have just as much compassion as the next person for those who suffer, but we're just not prepared to kill millions of other people in the forlorn hope some miracle cure might be found for them - especially when our time, effort and funding would be much better spent on proven sources for valid medical research. The argument C&F are making is nothing short of Hitlerian, and they should know better.

It just goes to prove that conservativism (despite the liberal spin to the contrary) comes in a variety of strains that don't always agree.

Just found your blog this morning. Excellent, precise post. I haven't yet figured out the Trackback thing, but I linked to your blog and referenced this post on my blog.

Hope you have time to visit.

A link worth reading is here:

Here, if only because he links to this.

I can't get enough of demysticizing the stem cell debate. Truth will out!

I think it would be best if we could determine which political party the stem cells were for/against. The democratic stem cells should be destroyed right away. Unless they are white Christian stemcells. Then we try and rehabilitate them. If that doesn't work, we nuke em.
