Where is Mayor Nagin?
An AP report posted at the WWL TV web site proclaims that New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin's "anger boils over in New Orleans." I'm beginning to wonder if the Mayor is actually in New Orleans.
(C)ity officials were seething with anger over what they called a slow federal response to a disaster that may have killed thousands.Where exactly is Mayor Nagin hanging his hat nowadays? Shouldn't the government of New Orleans be IN New Orleans coordinating the evacuation, and not "up there" somewhere (in Baton Rouge, perhaps)?"They don't have a clue what's going on down there," Mayor Ray Nagin told WWL-AM Thursday night. "They flew down here one time two days after the doggone event was over with TV cameras, AP reporters, all kind of goddamn - excuse my French everybody in America, but I am pissed...."
The mayor lashed out at the government, saying: "I have no idea what they're doing, but I will tell you this: God is looking down on all this and if they're not doing everything in their power to save people, they are going to pay the price because every day that we delay, people are dying and they're dying by the hundreds."
UPDATE: Sue found us a news story posted just today in the Washington Post, explaining that Nagin's reference was apparently pronounced from a room inside the Hyatt Hotel looking "down there" at the Super Dome, and that he is very much still in The Big Easy.
His city is under water. There's no electricity, no water to drink. Broken gas lines cause flames to erupt from filthy floodwaters. Mobs loot stores and exchange shots with police. Hungry people fight over food. Dead bodies float through the streets while the living huddle on rooftops, awaiting rescue.Well, good for the Mayor, and I retract my impertinent question. But I'm still at a loss why - if he's so close to the Super Dome - he's been unable to communicate with the people on the ground who are so hungry for leadership. Staying with the sinking ship as it goes down is the least the captain can do - the very least. It's really his job to get all the passengers into the lifeboats and steer the vessel safely into dry dock. The glowing Post story nitwithstanding, Nagin seems adrift, too busy in the radio room sending SOS signals to the Navy to properly stand at the conn and man the wheel.New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin stares at the apocalyptic wreckage of his city from a window in his makeshift command post in the Hyatt hotel, which sits across a flooded street from City Hall. His wife and three children have been evacuated. He has sent most of his staff to higher ground in Baton Rouge. But he remains behind, like a captain determined to stay with his sinking ship.

Comments
Everyone is so quick to point a finger as to who is to blame. It's absolutely shameful that the finger pointing takes precendence over simply doing the job that needs to be done.
Kudos to the city of Houston and all of the areas who are taking in the thousands of displaced people and organizing the relief efforts there. The strain on these areas to provide the basic necessities is great and they are rising to the challenge.

Sorry but Nagin is fully responsible for this mess. He was elected the mayor of New Orleans and with that title you are the leader. This time the leader was absent. Nagin had no plans for the police department and the looting, he had no plans getting the poor and sick out of the city, nor did he have a plan for clean up. He has the nerve to blame the feds. It's your City!!!! What have you done?

WHERE ARE THE BLACK REPUBLICANS? WHERE IS MS. RICE?
Posted by: VM | September 2, 2005 03:53 PM
I would hope Secretary of State Rice is in Washington, New York, or a foreign capital - in other words, doing her job. Contrary to the opinions of some, she ought not be "drivin' da bus ta Houston."

Lets see, he is in a hotel that has no water or electricity? He must be on the bottom floor of the hotel, but how can that be if he is looking down at the city.
An image comes to mind, but I think I will leave it at that.

A recent post asked, where are the republicans? I retort with, Where are the democrats? Orleans parish is a democratic majority and the only time we see democratic officials in our neighborhoods are when they need our votes to get them elected into public office to REPRESENT US. Where are they now? As a matter of fact, I have seen more republicans/conservative officials "pounding the pavement" to get things done for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. A more appropriate question should have been, Where are our "So called" civic leaders? Al, Jesse, Harry, etc.

Please no Jesse or Al!!! Again this situation just shows how liberal the media is and how they are not for Fair & Balanced news. If they were, they would be asking the Democratic Governor and the Democratic Mayor on their specific plans for pre and post hurricane New Orleans.
This will get ugly for Bush and with the gas prices, Cindy, Iraq Mess, and now Katrina. Bush and his team better get to work and put on a good front and get this country back into shape or Hillary 2008 will be for real.

It is the mayor, the gov'ner, the LOCAL politicians that have proved utterly failed as leaders. They allowed this event ot take lace because they did the politically expidient: they passed the buck. This is their disaster, it is unforgivable, and the MSM needs to get teh questions started.

The finger pointing issue is driving me crazy and I have been FURIOUS at Kanye West statement. I have been told by fellow African Americans that this "discredits" me, but my mother is white, and my father is black. Although some people have told me that I don't have the right to make statements like this, I think that I have an obligation having an unbiased opinion (basically being in the middle). I have been in the military and I know how long it takes to be deployed - the soldiers are usually ready before the supplies and equipment are. Hurry up and wait is the big thing... Maybe it is hard to understand but getting supplies to hundreds of thousands of people all wanting help at the same time, covering an area the size of Idaho MIGHT TAKE SOME TIME. I have cried watching the families who have lost loved ones, watching them get washed away, or those who just don't know where their family is. It hurts to see so many people hurting and not because they are black, but because they are people. NO ONE deserves to go through this regardless of race, religion, or walk of life. While the Mayor is shacked up in a hotel, cursing on the radio, people are down in the Superdome, right under his nose asking for answers, wanting leadership and promise. He only fuels the fire by making comments that he has on the air. I am a parent and if I were in a panic, I sure as hell would not let my kids know that. Someone must stay strong ... As far as Kanye West goes, he said the wrong thing at the wrong time. I don't know where people have gotten the idea that Bush hates black people from all this, especially since 2 of his closest coworkers are/were black (and one black woman - YES!). He hasn't done anything to make me feel like he hates me. Basically, the mayor and governor could have been more prepared but it does not matter now. I am glad that people are getting the help they need but unfortunately, a relief effort this massive just takes time, logistically. No one expected this and a lot of people even doubted it would happen. Now it is a reality and coastal towns all over this country will be more prepared because of it, or at least we hope so. My prayers are with the victims and their families.

Why the hell didn't the mayor get the people out on the 1000 school buses that were sitting in a lot. For God's sake he and the govenor know these folks are poor and the evacuation was MANDATORY SO WHY THE HELL DIDN'T THESE TWO GET EM OUT ON THE DAMN BUSES? Oh, I forgot, its O.K. cuz he took 400 folks and put in line in front of his constituents. He will have to answer for that one from "his people".

Speaking of school buses, did you see the story on Fox News of the young black man who "commandeered" a school bus and made his way to Houston? HE PICKED UP PASSENGERS ALONG THE WAY! He didn't know how to drive a bus, however, he made it to the Astrodome, I believe it was this morning, and saved a few lives in the process. Great Story, but, I guess it's not as sensational as a story about thousands of displaced "refugees" looting, raping, killing, and shooting at the very same people that's trying to help them. Props! to the Fox News Channel.

I Am just sickened by the finger pointing. There is so much blame to go around, why point? Just wave your arm generously in mid air and you're bound to sweep past several who deserve shouldering it! Thank you Sylvester for a good word about Fox, I agree! We need to see some heroism when we are all so ashamed of and for our government!!
