Easter Viewing

I woke early this morning and decided to put The Passion of the Christ in the DVD. I see something new in it each time. This time I noticed Jesus stomping on the snake, and the children morphing into gremlins as they tormented Judas; both are things I should have caught before, but did not expect this time. But mostly I noticed the language, its sound, its construct, and, surprisingly, how many words sounded familiar. I do not speak Aramaic, Latin or Hebrew; by the way.

But, what has most impressed me about that film is how it stands above the other movies which depict the Crucifixion. None of the others, including the one which played on the History channel today, relate the suffering the way Mel Gibson portrayed it in his movie. After watching Caviezel as Christ, beaten, whipped, scourged, and his unbending drive to accomplish his purpose, the others look like actors slumping backwards and trying to recall a tooth ache. Their pain does not look real anymore, because we have been shown the truth of the brutality of man toward his fellow man.

Jesus died for our sins, and he suffered in accomplishing that end. And I, for one, will always measure his passion, his gift, against the portrait Mr. Gibson has produced.

Amen!

The first time around I picked up on the snake (go figure). It is this type of depiction of snakes that angers me. Snakes are very timid and generally, just want to be left alone. If a snakes is not hungry and the prey is left with the snake, the prey may injure or kill the snake and the snake will not fight back! Most of the time, snakes are curled up in a nice cozy, warm spot, sleeping. I consider snakes God's perfect creation. They have no arms and no legs yet they are master climbers, hunters and killers.

You're playin' with the Devil there Sue. ;-)

Hey Chris, if Sue offers you an apple...

The other perfect thing about snakes is how well they fit under a man's foot.

A funny thing happened while I was reading this post. The Brian McKnight song "Me and You" from his Gemini CD started playing. It is a song dealing with the death of Christ. If you have never heard it, you should get the CD or download it from iTunes.

Kimbal, as I inferred in a comment to a post Chris made on Good Friday, some things are not really coincidences at all...

Thanks for the comment.

A part of me wants to watch The Passion again. I just don't seem to have the guts to do it; the first time is still too raw and it hurts. I'm glad i did watch it- i made myself watch to become closer to the pain i caused my Lord- to die for me.

I appreciated the respite Gibson gives us in particularly gruesome episodes- flashbacks of Christ's youth. And now, as i kiss the feet of Christ upon the cross on Good Friday- i have another reference to this act of humility He gave to me.

As for snakes... they are Biblically hated- serpents, that is. I just get the creeps over them, they are so smooth and creep me out. Sorry Sue. I'm glad someone appreciates them, but it definitely ain't me.
