Open Thread: Convention Monday
I'm going to be wandering around the streets for a few hours. Here's an open thread for convention-related thoughts.

[For new readers, please refrain from name-calling and profanity, and if you post urls, please put them in html format.] {emphasis italics mine, RJ}

So, if the level of discourse over there improves, well I am your humble servant in pursuit of truth, justice, reasoned debate and everything else American, glad to help out.

I am, however, curious about the wording, "new readers" in the policy advisery. Is this a caveat that excludes old readers, or just an assumption on the part of the administrator that his old readers already knew better?

And, yes, I did leave comments. On two threads, see extended entry, I am not particularly anxious to see the reaction I get. I was polite, within all of the rules, will I still be there when I return? We'll see.

Comments: Tonight's Speeches: Cover or Not?
et al - "There was no such disharmony during the Democratic convention. The speakers and the delegates (with rare exception) were one.

So the party that preaches the value of diversity, and routinely attacks the Repubs for not enough, had no diversity? Oh wait! You can have different groups, they just must not stray off the reservation!

Posted by Poker Player (aka Jim) at August 30, 2004 11:07 AM
The reason there was no disharmony evident at the DNC is the dissenters were outside the building in a cage.

The rethugs are trotting out a bunch of moderates who the day after the RNC ends will be thrown back out in the street and have no say in anything. These guys will always have a career as used car salesmen since they have perfected the bait and switch

Oh, they had diversity at the DNC: they manufactured (i.e. forced) it.
Quotas DNC:

http://www.clarionledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20040726/SPECIAL02/407260356/1002/NEWS01
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/politics/20040512-2303-gays-delegates.html

But, then, to quote Jerry Seinfeld, "Not that there is anthing wrong with that".

It is a difference in approach. The DNC wanted to make things appear as they would have them be. The Republicans are not ashamed to present things as they are. One side sees nothing wrong with manufacturing reality, the other side creates opportunity and then lets everyone see where we are as a nation.

Just another example of freedom at work, two truly diverse approaches.

Jeralyn and everybody else blogging here in NYC,

At 4pm is the Shut-Up-Athon and at 8pm is the Evildoers remix at Postmasters Gallery (19th Street, 9/10 avenues). There's a big bloggers event with John Perry Barlow, Wonkette, Jeff Jarvis and others at PS 122 and a whole lotta parties throughout the week as well. And we need guerilla dancers for Barlow's gig.

Go to my blog, www.culturekitchen.com for more information. Also, send me an email to blogdiva[atski]culturekitchen[dotski]com and let's see how we can hook up.

Tomorrow's blogger event, though, is a must. There's an party afterwards as well.

The Bush smear meme really is not true. But, hey, how about the Democratic 527s, did they smear? Howard Dean, Al Gore, Wesley Clark, et al, did they smear?

And if they did, and you insist that Bush did too, then which came first; 90 million in DNC 527s, or the SwiftVets?

In a land of free speech, fair for one, fair for all.

The Wind Vane Candidate

The Kerry wind. Always from the left, less so if his audience leans right, more so if he is seeking his crowd's endorsement.

The Parade Of Bull Walk

The second United States civil war continues. Where the first Civil War was about keeping the nation together, the second civil war is about the lefties attempt to end this country as we know it. While the conservative federalists are calling this skirmish, Bull Walk, (politely leaving the first word unfinished), the anarcharist left call it, appropriately, Metroasses.

They can march, but if the real enemy comes here, will they fight?

Dissension among the ranks?

Well... what do we have here? Dissension among the ranks, or did the Donks just assume that they had a block of voters in the bag when they really don't? Hmmm. Perhaps it's the Roe Effect coming to fruition!

Lucinda Beachy

Ms. Beachy is missing , a mother of three who lives near Tucson Arizona, she went to a well known area for a mountain hike on Monday and has not been heard from since. A search for her began the next day.

I know her parents through business, they were leaving here (Naples, Florida) Thursday to join the search, having been notified that she was missing Wednesday night.

Please say a prayer that this missing woman is found safe and sound.

Update: Found, alive but hurt. She had taken a fall, was unable to walk, survived on grass and stream water. Prayers answered.

My talkleft Experiment

I took the recommendation of a commentor and posted a recent TBR article on a comment page at talk left. I have avoided visiting reputed left-leaning sites because I have the general impression, from hearing the left speak on television, that there would be little room for discussion, that the idealogical position of the left leaves no room for alternate positions. My worst fears were confirmed, and in some ways, I am grateful that the site's administrator closed comments on that thread three hours after I posted the first comment on that topic.

The topic was Big Event in New York Monday Night , a call to put pressure on Republicans to support the right to kill babies. While I appreciate that the site is expanding the horizons of its readship by showing that Republicans do not think as a monolith; I hope those readers, and those Republicans come to understand the damage they are doing.

My post really wasn't connected to their theme, and I must admit that seeing NY and Monday night, I leapt to the conclusion that they were organizing in connection with the RNC convention; but nobody made note of how irrelevant my comments were beyond saying, "wha?". I am placing the comments made, before they were closed, on the extended area. Caution, some foul language, from one of their readers.

The gem of this experiment was this article. {hat tip Doctor Ace}

On April 22nd, 1971, 27 year old former Navy Lt. John Kerry testified against U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War as a member of "Vietnam Veterans Against the War". Senator J. William Fulbright (D-Arkansas) chaired the committee.

Coverage will include, in its entirety, John Kerry's opening remarks to members of the committee, followed by questioning by some committee members. This event was filmed by NBC News. In those areas where there is not a complete film archive of Kerry's testimony, it will be supplemented by audio from Pacifica Radio.

Rumors

The stranger seated next to me at the lunch counter shared an interesting rumor. Seems that he has heard that during the Republican Convention, Bush will call for a flat tax. The restaurant owner scoffed, saying that the accountants would go out of business. Actually, (If I were feeling ambitious I would supply a link here, but what good are rumors supported by references?), the CPAs have supposedly endorsed a flat tax, seems they believe they can make more money doing financial planning.

I can not tell you where I heard that SUVs are secretly planning a counter protest against the anti-RNC protestors in NYC. Word is that the owners of the environment destroying, people hating vehicles are not, I repeat, are not aware of the plans being hatched by their own transportation devices. The owners are none the less responsible for whatever actions are taken by the SUVs, chain of command, you know. The bu(i)ck doesn't stop where the rubber meets the road! Of course the SUVs have the potential to wipe out the entire population of NYC if they are not restrained. The omni-directional emission of deadly gaseous toxins will do untold damage to non-combatants even if the SUVs are sober enough to target only their intended foe with their main weapon, which the manufacturer calls a bumper. It will be hell to pay for bumper, thumper and the gentle as a rabbit peace protestors if this plan goes forward.

Ant(e)i Meme, Ante(i) Meme!

You assert that I have learned that the Iraq war Was wrong by something called "induction" and that this explains, or justifies, or something, how your conclusion can differ without creating any problems. In reality I have done no such thing (from what, exactly, do you think I "induced" the wrongevity of the Iraq war?); the notion of "induction" and all that it connotes is simply unrecognizable as anything remotely approximating or even resembling the thought processes by which I have learned the Truth that the Iraq was war WROGN!.

A parody site based solely on one joke, the left does not reason, can't possibly have staying power; can it?

Or is it a parody at all, they seem sincere when they say, (taken from his "About I" page. Btw this use of parentheses is one of the signature characteristics of this site, along with bad speling and badgrammer, and improper use of capital letters. At leest, that is wat i beleave, and donut tri to talk (resun) ) meo ut fo that postion).

At 11:27 PM, Anonymous said... A parody? Only the hating mind of a Repulblican could come up with that! Is it beyond your moral calcuas that the WAR was RONG! Everything else is secondary! Even breathing. Especially breathing!

I can't imagine that I will visit this site often, but it is good to know that somebody is chronicling these all too familiar earmarks of the internet active looney left. If it gets around that this site is a parody expect it to be hit by a hacker who will replace the "Proprietor's" screed with what the left really believes; but then how will we know that a change in message has occurred?

One final note, Steve and Chris once conspired to create a site like TIWWWB, but found that they could not write like the LLLs without losing the ability to think and had the sense to abandon the project before permanent damage set in.

More Kerry Questions

Since John Kerry refuses, until he wins (pardon me while I stifle my laughter).........., (back), to tell us his plans for Iraq, the economy, Homeland Security, and all of the other real-time issues; we are left to examine only his record. Now, then with regard to his Senate record, his self proclaimed accomplishments are.........(searching)...............(they must be here somewhere)............(still searching).............,(enough), apparently he is not claiming his Senate career achievements among his qualifications for President. Let's try his accomplishments in the private sector,........(searching).............(married rich woman, divorced, married an even richer woman)............(continuing search for pertinent claimed achievement).............(nevermind), it seems he has not established a record worthy of bragging about in the private sector. Well, he has talked about his military career; but somehow he has failed to mention that while still in the service he also protested against our country, including Senate testimony that disgraced our soldiers, and his secret meetings with our enemy!

I wonder why he hasn't made more mention of this in his resume? I wonder why we haven't been granted access to his military records (sign the 180, Senator), or been given a transcript of his private meeting with the communist North Vietnamese government officials while we were at war with them?

What else are you hiding, Senator, your Irish heritage? Tell us please, other than your four months service in Vietnam (35 years ago, and with disputed significance anyway), why should we elect you President? What have you done since VN that makes you worth consideration? What plans for our future do you have, (in detail, Senator)? Give us one reason, (other than, you are not Bush, that one only works for the Bushaters) why you should, even could, be President? And, while you are finally intorducing yourself, why shouldn't we consider you AWOL form the reserve duty, why shouldn't we consider you to have given comfort and aid to the enemy, why should we believe anything you say?

If you get an error while you're using the comments and you can't figure out why (or you think your comment is legit), please let me know.

Eye of the storm!

As Chris has stated, our little corner of the world was slapped around pretty good last Friday afternoon (the 13th no less!). Chris, Rick, and I all survived relatively unscathed, with Chris getting the worst of it. Unfortunately, not everyone was as lucky as we were. As bad as the pictures look, the reality is even worse. Those images are 2D and flat, and you cannot smell the rotting food and sea water, and you definitely cannot feel the heat and humidity. And what no one can imagine is how utterly cut-off people feel... no phone, no TV, no power, no toilets, no drinking water.

Going to the beach is a favorite pastime around here... but it's not so good when the beach comes to you! Reality TV is fun to watch, but not everyone wants to be a contestant on Survivor! But that is exactly what people are dealing with.

I know this is an election year and we have often urged you all to contribute to the GWB reelection efforts, but the people affected by Hurricane Charley could really use any help that anyone can provide. And if you cannot afford to donate, that's OK... prayers can be given for free and will be greatly appriciated!

Howdy, Neighbor!

I regret that I've been unable to post anything recently, but I'm proud to say my homework was eaten by something slightly bigger than my puppydog. The absence, of course, was caused by the recent visit of everyone's favorite party-crasher, Hurricane Charley. At first, we were without power, but since Sunday my main complaint has been the lack of an Internet connection. Now that this has been rectified, I'm glad to finally have the opportunity to pop up from my hiding place and report that I've met someone with even more hot air than yours truly.

While Charley himself left a trail of devastation in his wake, he did give some of us the excuse to finally say a few words to and get to know our neighbors. And while we had power but no 'net, my daughter whittled away some time by digitally weaving a montage of pictures of our post-cyclone homestead, with an appropriate musical accompaniment. "Today the Washington Post prints one of those articles that drive conservatives like me crazy. The article, a front-page news analysis titled Kerry Put On Defensive About Iraq, just drips with sympathy for Kerry. But I don't find any clear misstatements of fact in the piece. The bias is in the way it's worded, starting with the very first paragraph:"

And, note, I said "non" partisan, not bi-partisan. Once we expected our papers to not take sides, or at least when they did, they had the honesty to place their bias in the opinion section. Now they report their opinion as news.

Sign The 180, Senator!

Curiouser and curiouser.

Did the Rev. David Alston, a man who spoke about his experiences aboard Kerry's craft during Vietnam, even serve with Kerry?

The only problem with the above statements is they are deceiving and can be shown to be false. Evidence shows David Alston could not have been a crew member under Sen. Kerry, nor could he have participated in combat operations with Sen. Kerry because they were assigned to two different boats. From December 14, 1968 to January 29, 1969 Sen. Kerry commanded the PCF-44 while David Alston was the Gunner onboard the PCF-94 under Lt.(jg) Peck. On January 29, 1969 both Peck and Alston were wounded and hospitalized. We know Alston was wounded on this date because his casualty report was made available briefly by the Kerry Campaign before it was curiously removed.
(Official Navy Casualty Report for David Alston)

This story is also being covered extensively at Captain's Quarters. There are still questions to be answered, but the evidence in hand makes this one look very shaky for Kerry. Capt. Ed provides evidence that the Kerry campaign has already taken credit for action which Kerry did not participate in, because he had not taken command of the boat at that time, and he was actually serving on a different boat on those dates.

Expect the Demoncats to decry the timing of these patriots noticing these falsehoods only after the Kerry campaign made the claims, and not before. Will they also add claims of racism because of Alston's color? Will they claim that the Navy was racist because Alston was the only, supposed, crew member of the 1/29/69 action not to receive commendation for his, supposed, action on that date? Did you even know that Kerry had served in Vietnam? And why did Haliburton convince the first JFK to enter Vietnam, there has been no oil discovered there?

Mike's Insight

I was laughing so hard when I heard this yesterday; I am glad Rush put it on his site.

CALLER: I just wanted to make the comment that it seems to me, you know, that it seems to me that the liberal position about George W. Bush and taking us to war in Iraq has been that he took us to war in Iraq based on a lie. And the 9/11 Commission was able to prove that that was false. However, it does seem to me that John Kerry took us out of a war based on a lie, and I think we need to start asking more questions about that. RUSH: That's an interesting take. That's an interesting take. You have been a great student. We ought to give you -- you know, we're thinking of starting our own swift boat unit here, the EIB Swift Boats for Truth --

CALLER: Reporting for duty, sir.

RUSH: (Laughing.) Make you a commander. That's an interesting juxtaposition, because the left is lying about -- they do think Bush lied about weapons of mass destruction. They do think Bush lied about Saddam. They think lied about everything to get us into war. It's inexplicable. But yet Kerry comes home, Vietnam Vets Against the War, starts lying about some of these atrocities and it helps turn the tide. So he got us out of a war based on a lie. Interesting thought. I like the way you're thinking out there, typical of a student here at the Limbaugh Institute. Thanks, Mike, very much.

Qerry Military Records Hostage Situation Day 116

On April 18, 2004 John Kerry appeared on NBC News' Meet The Press. During the interview Mr. Kerry stated that all of his military records had been released, yet to date they are available for review. It is time for Kerry to put to an end the pain and suffering of those who wait to see these records without satifaction, let these records go!

MR. RUSSERT: The Boston Globe reports that your commanding officer, Lieutenant Commander Grant Hibberd has suggested that you perhaps didn't earn your first Purple Heart and question whether you should have left Vietnam after six months. In order to deal with those kinds of issues, when I asked President Bush about his service in the Texas Guard, he agreed to release all his military records, health records, everything. Would you agree to release all your military records?

SEN. KERRY: I have. I've shown them--they're available to you to come and look at. I think that's a very unfair characterization by that person. I mean, politics is politics. The medical records show that I had shrapnel removed from my arm. We were in combat. We were in a very, very--probably one of the most frightening--if you ask anybody who was with me, the two guys who were with me, was probably the most frightening night that they had that they were in Vietnam and we're...

MR. RUSSERT: But you'll make all your records public.

SEN. KERRY: They are. People can come and see them at headquarters and take a look at them. I'm not going to--but I'll tell you this. I'm proud of my service....

I wonder what thought he didn't finish when he said, "I'm not going to--"? Could it be he was going to say, "I'm not going to--" release them to the public; though he had already said that he had released them? An inconsistency from John Kerry, (who btw was in Viet Nam), surely not!

We've Been hit

Our comments log shows a list of viagra commercials. Obviously, since none of our authors need, or solicit on behalf of Viagra; we have been attacked by a commercial interest. Please ignore these advertisements.

Interestingly, considering this coincidental attack, I had a conversation with a pal on the way into our local arena league football game tonight concerning the over use of erection enhancement drugs. We agreed that if you don't have a medically diagnosed reason to use these products (a common condition for the elderly), and you still use them to "enhance" your sexual experience; then you must be gay! If you aren't excited by the opposite sex, enough to perform, then you have a problem; a problem called, you are gay. So, now you know, deal with your problem, and don't darken our door again.

Note: Chris, once you delete the attack comments, let me know so that I can delete this post.

UPDATE (from Chris): I regret to say this jackass is good at his craft, as we've never been hit this hard or fast before. After I'd done my thing, more comment spam arrived even as I was responding to a legitimate thread. When I woke up this morning, there were a ton more I had to delete. From the large number of IPs from a diverse selection of Class A addresses, he might be using some sort of scrambler to mask his actual IP - which would mean the 20 new IPs I've banned are potentially keeping out legitimate comments. Unfortunately, I've had to disable comments until I can devise a strategy to combat the problem. Please bear with us temporarily while we get around this.

One Black Republican in Tennessee 8th

Whoever's leading the Republican Party in Tennessee should be shot. And when he's out of the way, I've got a few other ideas.

An unabashed racist will represent the Republican party in the November election for a congressional seat after a write-in candidate failed to derail his effort.

With 86 percent of the primary vote counted Thursday, write-in candidate Dennis Bertrand had just 1,554 votes compared to 7,671, or 83 percent, for James L. Hart, a believer in the discredited, phony science of eugenics.

Just one lone voice decided to stand up for God, party, and sanity.
Since the deadline for getting on the ballot had passed, Bertrand, also a Republican, began a write-in campaign, saying he wanted to protect the party's honor.

"I think his beliefs are not beliefs of any party that I know of," Bertrand said Thursday night. "I knew it was going to be a really long shot, but in good conscience, I had to at least give it an attempt."

Bertrand, a financial analyst and former military officer, was on active duty with the National Guard when the deadline to get on the primary ballot passed.

Where the heck were our party leaders when all this was going on? Hello, Ed?! Don't you think it would have been a good idea to send someone down there to stop this before it blows up in our faces? Is this your idea of "outreach" to the black community?!

Waffle the Hutt denies his own personhood

This is complicated, so bear with me.

Today, John Kerry suggested that he "would have handled news of the al Qaeda attacks" on 9/11 differently than the President if he had been in office.

Blogs for Bush have Kerry's own words which suggest he's right: rather than remaining calm and doing his job as Commander-in-Chief, he would have clutched.

Now, we don't have any reason to believe that much has changed in John Kerry's life since then, because it appears his campaign still lives by the motto, "nobody could think".

If you haven't experienced cerebral activity in almost three years, wouldn't you be brain dead?

Only if your head is outside a vagina, because after all, when it is inside one you're not a person.

Ergo, John Kerry is not a person.

In case you think I'm kidding, the Russians agree with me.

What do you get with a vote for John Kerry?

"Spook reform"

An interesting question pops into my head:

Am I the only one who gets very uncomfortable when I see this in the title of a column, especially one by a conservative? Does that mean I'm "making progress", or (conversely) stumbling into political correctness? Is anyone out there beyond uncomfortable and actually offended by the title? Does this kind of double entendre cause Republicans to have problems garnering black votes? Am I looking too deeply into something stupid? Is anyone offended that I'm asking these questions in the first place?

These aren't rhetorical questions - I really want to discuss this. I'm looking at it like a verbal Rorschach test: what do you think of when you read this title, and how does it make you feel?

You Might Be A NeoPat If

It isn't easy coining a new word. Just to be sure that I wasn't inventing an existing word, I Googled "neopat", all lower case. I was returned "about 1810" hits ranging from computer worms, to ankle braces, to computer games, to "Near Earth Orbit" data written in Korean. So, I refined my search by asking for results for "Neo-Patriots", bingo 147 hits, thus proving that my word is not new. Even the abbreviation "neo-pats" is already in use. Undetered I present my definition, or better yet, examples that fit the profile, (for, I really can't explain who is a NeoPat; but I know one when I see one). They are the new Patriots; and with apologies to Jeff Foxworthy I present this edition of,

Enlisting in wartime

I strongly suggest this piece by Michael A. Lindenberger as "Recommended Reading".

Where is the conservative Michael Moore?

Oh, that's right. We already know who they are.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone appear ready to drop a bombshell right on top of the election, since it will come out barely a week before the polls open. I don't know if it will do any good for us (especially since a fair number of their jokes are backhanded slaps at conservative ineptitude), but we can always hope maybe we'll laugh through four years of a Kerry administration hounded by these guys.
