Calling This Ironic is a HUGE Understatement

First, allow me to apologize for not posting more in the last month or so. My position was the victim of corporate downsizing, so I've been spending quite a bit of time either on the road or looking for a job.

However, in scanning Fark this morning, I came across something SO ironic, there's not a decent enough adjective to describe it. By way of comparison, my electric bill last month on my non-Energy Star compliant home running anywhere from 2-3 computers simultaneously (one of which 24/7) being heated/cooled by a heat pump still filled with R-22 freon was only $78.23.

Thanks, Al. You made my month.

Effects Of Legal Immigration Explained

Have you seen this presentation?

Very interesting, no? And not one word about the added effects of illegal immigration either.

What is going on here?

I was shocked and deeply saddened when I read Drudge today. One of the more prominent headlines read: UN secretary general urges Iran to stop enriching uranium. Clicking the link leads to this Breitbart.com article.

All I could think was "When did these UN types get so bold and reactionary?"

I mean they go from "UN secretary general would like Iran to stop enriching uranium" to "UN secretary general asks Iran to stop enriching uranium" and then jump straight away to "UN secretary general urges Iran to stop enriching uranium".

Whatever happened to "UN secretary general suggests Iran stop enriching uranium".

This new Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, is just way too volatile and reckless.

It's all Bush's fault! (...and Global Warming!)

LATimes: Obama Not 'Black Enough'?

I strongly suggest this piece by Warner Todd Huston as "Recommended Reading".

Is Mother Nature having hot flashes?

Chris and I were discussing this article at lunch the other day ( A big hat tip BTW to Phil Brennan at NewsMax and Mandy and her minions over at the WINK Newsradio/Daybreak site!) and I was telling him of some of the surprising (to me at least) scientific findings discussed in the article. One of the more fascinating facts is this one:

The world's oceans are being heated by underwater tectonic activity — underwater volcanic eruptions and blisteringly hot magma seeping up from cracks in the sea floor.

The heated ocean water creates high levels of CO2 that it sends aloft along with huge amounts of moisture. That moisture becomes precipitation — rain in the spring, summer, and fall, and snow in the winter. Increased amounts of moisture in the upper atmosphere equals increased amounts of precipitation.

The hotter the oceans, the more water vapor sent heavenward and the heavier the precipitation. This explains the large number of record-breaking rainfalls we've been seeing in the past couple of years — with as noted above, areas of the United States getting 20 inches of rain in a day or so.

As for that dreaded greenhouse gas, CO2, atmospheric levels of which now exceed 400 parts per million (ppm), it is important to note that paleological records show that every time CO2 levels have exceeded 300 ppm there has been an ice age. Every time — without exception.

After relating this interesting information to Chris, he decided to try to play the roll of Maja Rushie (Rush Limabaugh) and make this prediction:
"In 10 years we will be in a verifiable Global Cooling phase and those that are screeching today about Global Warming will be claiming then that all the underground Nuclear testing has caused the oceanic volcanoes, and that they were right all along that Global Warming (via these oceanic volcanoes) caused the Global Cooling and the coming Ice Age."

While this prediction is just outlandish enough to actually come true, I had to ask Chris to amend the prediction just a bit, because I don't think the "GlobeWarms" will fault Nuclear testing - that too 60's! No, they will blame all the drilling for oil - and the Unites States for demanding all that oil - and claim that (1) all those empty pockets (where the oil used to be) needed to be filled with something - so (2) they all got filled with magma, (3) heating the earth, (4) causing increased precipitation, (5) causing increased CO2 levels and more snow in the winter months, (6) causing the new ice age.

How about that. The same six degrees of Global Warming works for Global Cooling too!

And in other Global Warming news, have you heard about these benefit concerts that AlGore - Doctor of Climatology, Inventor of the Internet, and all around good guy - wants to produce? His proposal is for "Live Earth" to be a 24-hour concert, held in July, broadcast simultaneously from different cities around the world. He must've been compelled to choose July because, of course, there's too much snow around to do a Global Warming concert right now!

Well, it seems Dr. Al is insisting that one of the concert venues be... (drum roll please) Antarctica! Be careful Al, you're taking a pretty big risk here, given the fact that you have had to cancel "Inconvenient Truth" Global Warming speaking engagements twice in two years due to inclement weather - SNOW!

Dr. Al wants to shine a spotlight on himself and try to put on a concert not only in Antarctica, but also in the cities of Johannesburg and Sydney, among others. I don't think he realizes that Antarctica and those two cities are in the Southern Hemisphere and that in July they will be in the middle of winter!

The mean teperature in Sidney in July is 54ºF, while Johannesburg's is 52ºF. Now that's the MEAN - which means that there is a 50% chance that it could be colder. Indeed, the average low for both cities is in the low 40sºF. And while that is not likely to be cold enough for snow, it could very well be cold enough for the concert goers to need to a thick coat and gloves.

Here's a clue Al - having a concert to promote the cause of Global Warming where the audience is wearing winter coats and gloves may not go over too well. Just a thought!

Oh, and did anyone else happen to see the fine debunking Sean Hannity gave the ol Internet inventor himself? Well, in case you missed it...

Housekeeping- Doc Lee's Psyops Campaign

Doc Lee.jpg

Shown above is the response I received in July '06 from one of our best and brightest, Doc Lee, an American soldier. Somehow I failed to mention this Psychological Operations campaign when it came to my attention, way back in June 2006. And, then I failed to mention this letter he sent, my bad. But I did participate by sending a few refrigerator magnets. I included one which I had featured here previously. And it took some deliberation before I decided that it was okay to send a religious themed magnet to a Muslim country. But Doc Lee did not see it as an negative, as witnessed by his mention of it in the letter above, and as evidenced by the picture from his website in which it is shown prominently, View image

Doc thought it to be appropriate, so I am glad that I sent it. I hope that it did some good, as he suggested it might in his letter.

What Doc and his men were doing over there is antithetical to the image the Democrats are so bent on promoting of our military. Dick Durbin portrays them as torturers. John Kerry says they are terrorizing women and children in the dark of night. And it seems that all but a handful of Democrats wish to convince us that they are losing, and that their efforts are misguided. When in fact they are over there courageously promoting human dignity and working hard to reinforce the image of America as a friend to all those who wish to live in peace. While doing all they are allowed to do to eliminate the threats presented by the bad ones.

I, for one, am glad to know that men such as Doc are on my side. And, I hope he, and all of our fighting men know that most Americans are on their side.

Reality Check- Global Climate Norm

It seems to me that if global warming is going to be considered a climatic dysfunction, then there must be a climatic norm which we can compare today's climate against. We know there have been ice ages, times when it was colder worldwide than today, and we know those colder times came to an end and the planet grew warmer. So, here is my reality check; what specific conditions, and at what time did such exist, that we can say, that is the ideal condition for the planet?

Without that benchmark how can we determine if any other time is, or is not normal, climatically speaking?

The Black Republican Of The Year 2006

This year we have selected an historian as the recipient of our annual award, which is given each February to someone who reflects the spirit of the original "Black Republican" Abraham Lincoln. We try to make the announcement on the anniversary of Mr. Lincoln's birth, February 12th; this year we needed a few extra days to complete the presentation, so this post has been backdated.

So, without further ado, I present The Black Republican OF The Year Award recipient for 2006; Victor Davis Hanson.

A noted historian, Mr. Hanson is also one of today's preeminent social commentators. One cannot read any of his writings without finding him to be informed, fair, and dedicated to reporting the world as it is, while others report as they would have us believe it to be. He pulls no punches, he plays no favorites.

Five years after September 11, and three-and-a-half years after toppling Saddam Hussein, the U.S. is almost as angry at itself as it is at the enemy. Two quite antithetical views of the war on terror — and indeed, the entire American role in the Middle East — are now crystallizing.

Ideology and political affiliation are no longer necessarily touchstones to either opinion..........

Republican realists are welcomed by liberal Democrats, who want nothing to do with the neo-Wilsonian neo-conservatives that once would have seemed more characteristic of liberal’s erstwhile idealism. It is not just that public intellectuals, politicians, generals, and journalists have different views, but their views themselves are different in almost every 24-hour news cycle. Even the Bush administration at times seems torn, gravitating between both schools of thought.

A read of the rest of that piece clearly demonstrates the depth and perspective VDH brings to his writings. And then there is his ability to intertwine historical comparisons into the discussion.
When Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman pulled up to Savannah, Ga., after his legendary March to the Sea in December 1864, he was savagely slandered in the Southern press as a renegade leader of a "vandal horde."

But at that same time, leading Confederate officers privately appealed to him, hoping he would guarantee the safety of the relatives they had left behind in Savannah. Why, Sherman wondered, would his sworn enemies trust that such an enemy might be kind to their loved ones — unless they knew that their own slurs about him were mere rhetoric?

That same sort of pretense is evident in the Middle East, where the leaders of countries and organizations hostile to or critical of the United States often trust us far more than they let on.

And more than analyze and provide context he knows when to give advice, and his judgment is well worth heeding. After all, he has history on his side. That principle is well proven in his recent essay entitled "Give Petraeus a Chance".

In a flash of succinctness he begins and ends his advice within the title, and then fills the body with examples of historical successes which only occurred when the principles held to their core beliefs and trusted that with continued effort the right outcome would transpire. Brilliant writing, on point references, impeccable advice.

Leadership takes many forms. One need not be elected to be a leader. But, to be a leader worthy of that title in America one needs to be unwaveringly committed to the truth, and anchored in reality. VDH is all of that. Honest. Out in front. And anchored in a realism which only comes from knowing the past, (George Santayana would be proud) and a desire to see his fellow men avoid making the same mistakes as have their predecessors. With every essay he speaks power to blather; a trait we more of in these times of incoherent judgment, media manipulation of the news, and a very real threat to our existence.

Victor Davis Hanson exhibits integrity, judgment and discipline. His motivation is unselfish. He wants all lives bettered. Abraham Lincoln lived his life in that same way, "with malice toward none, with charity for all".

Happy Nine Score And Eighteen Mr. Lincoln

Born this day in 1809 and destined to become our 16th President, we honor Abraham Lincoln on this anniversary of his birth.

I chose to pay homage by reading one of his speeches. Today, I chose the final appearance he made with Stephen Douglas. This speech, performed October 15, 1858, took place in the town of my birth, Alton Illinois. And, as I was not there at the time, owning to my having not yet been born, I thought it fitting to review that bit of history which occurred where my own history was established.

I am not capable of delivering a worthy synopsis of this speech, it speaks for itself. But, please allow me to present this snippet to tantalize.

" Allow me while upon this subject briefly to present one other extract from a speech of mine, more than a year ago, at Springfield, in discussing this very same question, soon after Judge Douglas took his ground that negroes were not included in the Declaration of Independence:—
I think the authors of that notable instrument intended to include all men, but they did not mean to declare all men equal in all respects. They did not mean to say all men were equal in color, size, intellect, moral development, or social capacity. They defined with tolerable distinctness in what they did consider all men created equal,—equal in certain inalienable rights, among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This they said, and this they meant. They did not mean to assert the obvious untruth that all were then actually enjoying that equality, or yet that they were about to confer it immediately upon them. In fact, they had no power to confer such a boon. They meant simply to declare the right, so that the enforcement of it might follow as fast as circumstances should permit.
They meant to set up a standard maxim for free society which should be familiar to all,—constantly looked to, constantly labored for, and even, though never perfectly attained, constantly approximated, and thereby constantly spreading and deepening its influence, and augmenting the happiness and value of life to all people, of all colors, everywhere."

Lincoln was a realist, and a dreamer. Practical, or, as a Clint Eastwood character might remark, a man who knew his and his fellow man's limitation, yet, visionary and fair.

This speech took place years before he became President, at a time when he believed that slavery had been allowed to continue as a part of our new nation for practical reasons. But, he also believed it was to continue with a wink to a covert understanding that it was a practice which could not, and should not be with us forever. He expected it to die a peaceful death if the constrictions of its growth which he found present in the Constitution were allowed to do their work. In the end we now know that a peaceful death was not in the offing, and a great many Americans died before, and in the cause of, slavery's end.

Way back, when I was in college, I had a professor who exclaimed that freedom does not exist, we are never free. It was a hard concept for me to grasp, but, today I would say that Paul was right, everything has a cost, and nothing is free. The price need not be in blood shed. If Lincoln had been able to educate enough, or the right members of the agitating sides to his vision of how our government works, and of the true nature of the compact our founding fathers made with one another on our behalf, war could have been avoided. Sometimes the price to achieve "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" is to listen and comprehend, and then to be willing to play by the rules. More often our greedy impatient natures overwhelm our respect for the greater good, and then somebody has to get their ass kicked. And, God willing, then the right thing gets done anyway.

What, no cake?

Okay, I know I've been distracted and brooding, but I never meant it to be so bad that I wouldn't celebrate the good times. When I realized we've almost missed TBR of the Year, it also occurred to me I never noted our fourth birthday, either. A welcoming message to the start of Year 5 has been been backdated.

Time flies

In a terrible oversight, I look at my calendar and realize we're two days away from awarding our 2006 The Black Republican of the Year Award, and I have yet to even ask for nominations. Who among the inhabitants of the fruited plain (and beyond) best exemplified the spirit of The Black Republican in the past year?

The more things change

Yesterday was the birthday of Ronald Wilson Reagan, a president so great his like may never be seen again in my lifetime. In honor of this 96th anniversary of his birth, yesterday Mark Levin played a speech on his radio show that Mr. Reagan gave way back in 1964. In its time, it was perhaps the greatest description of conservative philosophy ever delivered, and its power and eloquence have not receded over the years. In fact, I was particularly struck by the fact that - with the exception of replacing the Soviet Union with radical Muslim extremism as the great Evil of our day, and taking into account the increased size and cost of federal spending - NOT ONE WORD fails to be just as true today as the day it was spoken.

Unlike neo-liberal platitudes that must be retooled to account for every inane crisis they choose to exploit, and unlike their "facts" which must be constantly redefined to fit into their socialistic utopianism, conservative values are timeless, and this recording is something every American should hear to drive that concept home. Listen and imagine that every point Mr. Reagan is making about liberalism and tyranny, so true in our world today, was spoken over 42 years ago.

Democrat Spam (ick)

Somehow, I signed up for Dick Durbin's tin foil hat newsletter. I don't remember exactly the ad I clicked on to do said action, so I can't refer anyone else to do it. After the first 'newsletter', I decided that this was useful as an insight into the left's mindset. That was until today, when I got an e-mail from the DCCC. It isn't that I mind getting more insight into their strategies and ideas and whatnot, I'm miffed that Durbin's website provided THEM with my e-mail address. It was either them or Tim Mahoney's campaign. So much for the spam-free GMail account I had.

However, for those interested in what the DCCC e-mail had to say:

Dear Friend,

The mission of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is to elect Democrats to the U.S. House of Representatives.

As we prepare for the 2008 elections, the DCCC is reaching out to civic-minded individuals to keep them up-to-date on breaking news on our efforts to strengthen and secure our Democratic majority.

As one of our top supporters, we would like to communicate with you by sending regular email updates on key issues and breaking news in your area.

If you are NOT interested in receiving email alerts from the DCCC, please click here to "opt out" of our email newsletter.

Sincerely,

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee

Paid for by the DCCC, www.dccc.org, and not authorized
by any candidate or candidate's committee.

If they're not associated with a candidate or a candidate's committee, how did they get my e-mail address and why do they think I'm a "top supporter"? Lucky freakin me.
